Types of Steel Materials and Their Uses

Steel is a plethora types of steel materials of material that can be utilized for a variety of purposes. Steel is used in more than 55% of cars. Its flexibility is determined by the kind of alloy elements used to make it, because these elements affect the overall strength endurance, durability, and performance. The way in which the metal is cooled can have significant effects on its microstructure and therefore, its overall properties. It is also manipulated to achieve specific characteristics like machinability, yield strength, and resistance to corrosion.

Steel is iron which has had other elements alloyed to it in order to improve its physical properties and make the steel suitable for specific uses. The proportions of these extra alloying elements determine the steel category it belongs to, and thus its overall performance in various applications.

For instance stainless steel has at least 11% chromium, which makes it resistant to corrosion. This characteristic is what makes it ideal for a wide range of applications like kitchen utensils and cutlery. Tool steel, in contrast is characterized by an extremely high durability and abrasion resistance which makes it a favorite for hand tools and machine dies. Additionally, the superior ductility and weldability of carbon steels make them suitable for a broad array of applications. Electrical steel is on the other hand is an extremely specialized grade of steel that is composed of silicon (typically around 3%). This enhances the magnetic properties, and also reduces the loss of eddy-current. This makes it ideal for laminations and transformer cores of electric motors.
